Special Session Ends Without Budget

Special Session Ends Without Budget

The special session ended on Tuesday with no General Fund budget in place for the 2016 fiscal year, which begins October 1.

On Monday, the House of Representatives voted 92 – 2 to reject the Senate-passed budget, which would have cut about $185 million from the General Fund. Governor Bentley will now have to call the legislature back for a second special session.

Rep. Steve Clouse (R – Ozark) and Rep. Victor Gaston (R – Mobile) cast the only two votes in favor of the budget. Both made it clear that they did not like the budget, but felt it was the legislature’s responsibility to send a budget to the Governor.

It is unclear when the Governor will call the legislature back for the second special session.
