2015 Organizational Session Update
The Alabama Legislature wrapped up a quiet two-day Organizational Session on Wednesday, January 14, 2015. During this time, the House and Senate elected leadership, adopted rules, and approved committee assignments.
There were not many changes in leadership in either Chamber. Sen. Del Marsh (R – Anniston) was reelected as Senate President Pro Tem, and Rep. Mike Hubbard (R – Auburn) was reelected as Speaker of the House.
Sen. Greg Reed (R – Jasper) was elected Majority Leader of the Senate, which was previously held by Sen. Jabo Waggoner (R – Vestavia). Sen. Waggoner will continue as Chairman of the Rules Committee, which sets the daily agenda for the Senate.
Rep. Victor Gaston (R – Mobile) was reelected as Speaker Pro Tem, and Rep. Mac McCutcheon (R – Huntsville) will continue serving as Chair of the House Rules Committee.

The 2015 Legislative Session convenes on Tuesday, March 3. The General Fund budget will likely dominate discussion throughout the session as the state faces a $250 million shortfall in the 2016 budget. The Governor and legislative leadership have said “everything is on the table” regarding ways to fix recurring budgetary problems.
Statewide elected officials will be sworn in on Monday, January 19 during a ceremony on the Capitol steps. Governor Robert Bentley, Lt. Governor Kay Ivey, Attorney General Luther Strange, Treasurer Young Boozer, Secretary of State John Merrill, State Auditor Jim Ziegler, and Agriculture Commissioner John McMillan will all take their oaths of office on Monday. State School Board members Yvette Richardson, Mary Scott Hunter, and Betty Peters will also take their oaths of office during the ceremony.
The ceremony will be followed by a parade up Dexter Avenue and “Thank You, Alabama” Party at Cramton Bowl. Governor Bentley will also host an Inaugural Celebration Monday night. For more information on all Inaugural events, visit the Inauguration website.
